The campaign to preserve the former residence of composer Chi-Yuan Kuo, launched by the local group Yuanli Hi Home Team, is redefining Kuo’s legacy. The team has worked with the Chi-Yuan Kuo Music Association to examine the criteria for registering the former residence as a historical building, and has invited members of the public to the residence to piece together the history of Kuo and Yuanli from a large number of artifacts and documents. The team has organized museology workshops and forums to equip the public with the knowledge they need to investigate Kuo’s life and significance. To reach out to more people, the team has also put together flash mob performances, concerts at the former residence, and cinema music nights. The preservation campaign is a process of public empowerment, the ultimate goal of which is to enable Taiwanese culture to sink its roots deep in our land so that it flourishes and is available to all.
