In 2016, the National Museum of Taiwan History emerged from the confines of the museum and began to reach out to local communities, encouraging residents to become knowledge producers, preservers of history and culture, and spokespeople for local affairs. The Museum launched a field study program, working with local residents to conduct historical and geographical research, curate exhibitions, produce maps, and promote educational events. In 2018, the results of field studies were transformed into a touring exhibition Porting Houses and Adaption: The Land of Taijiang in Taiwan that is still visiting local communities. Educational activities have also been organized to bring visitors to the places where historical events took place. A communal house-building event became an engine for change in the local community and local residents became cultural agents preserving local knowledge and continuing its production. This is a testimony to how Taiwan’s museums have progressed.
