The National Museum of History has been closed since 2018 for its three-year renovation as part of a wider development project. As a result, the Museum’s collection of 53,001 nationally important artifacts has for the first time been relocated to a number of other museums. Many innovative technologies were used to prepare for the massive relocation: electronic records of artifacts, high-quality digital archives, a QR-code query system, and a traceability system for collection management. The use of these innovative technologies has created a new management model for museums in Taiwan.
Starting in 2016, the Museum has also been using digital reverse engineering and 3D printing technologies to create digital archives of artifacts designated national treasures and significant antiquities (e.g. the Green-Glazed Pottery Ox and the Tri-color Horse), while also making replicas for the Mobile Museum Project. Since completing these initiatives, the Museum will continue the high-quality 3D scanning of artifacts in its collection for online and offline value-added applications in the future.
