2019 International Museum Day

Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) established International Museum Day in 1977 with the aim of conveying a powerful message: that museums are an important means of cultural life and exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.

This conviction was already strong since the birth of our organisation in 1946, but the creation of this global celebration, marked on May 18th, strived to amplify it all over the world, across all layers of societies. More than 40 years later, International Museum Day has successfully become a key date in the calendar of cultural and educational institutions, governments, and the civil society.

In 1992, International Museum Day adopted a theme for the first time: Museums and the Environment. Since then, this event has served as a platform to bring together museums and the public to reflect around a contemporary topic. From Indigenous Peoples in 1993 to Difficult Histories in 2017, the celebration has promoted museums as spaces of dialogue, healing, exchange and change.

This year, the theme is “Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition”. As museums strive to reinvent themselves in a rapidly changing era, they are finding new ways of honouring the histories of their communities. This moment of transition raises questions and opens the door to opportunities and innovation. How can we preserve the precious traditions of our past? Which new traditions will we create for those who will come after us?

Next May 18th, thousands of museums and their diverse communities all around the world will come together again for International Museum Day. From Mexico to Indonesia, special activities, conferences and parties will happen between their walls and beyond. We invite everybody to join us in this celebration and work on keeping its message alive through the rest of the year!
